Student Internships

F.H. King offers a variety of internship opportunities for students interested in becoming more involved with the org. The responsibilities of each position are diverse, but each position requires a strong sense of motivation and the ability to work independently. Project interns will work closely with one or more board members to accomplish their goal, and will be expected to put in consistent, quality work to positively impact F.H. King, UW, and the broader Madison community.

Farm

Inventory and Analysis Project Internship

Research and record data to create inventory, maps, and other representations of data from our Eagle Heights garden. GIS and map-making experience preferred.

Mushroom Project Internship

Learn about and experiment with new ways to grow mushrooms indoors (wintertime) or outdoors (summertime). Will work with the garden directors to grow mushrooms for distribution at Harvest Handouts. Fungi experience preferred, but not required.

Perennial Plot Project Internship

Work with the Garden Directors to plan and maintain our plot of perennials in our Eagle Heights Garden, with an emphasis on permaculture practice. Permaculture experience preferred, but not required.

Beekeeping Internship

Work with the Garden Directors to manage and care for our bee hive, potentially establishing a second hive. Creates and maintains a long-term hive health document, recording the status of our hive each week. May work with the Programming Director to co-lead a workshop on beekeeping.

Urban Agriculture

Bike Mechanic Project Internship

Help repair and maintain our Full Cycle Freight Compost bikes. Mechanical background in bike repair required. May work with the Programming Director to co-lead a workshop on bike repair and maintenance. Work with the Urban Agriculture Directors to increase the efficiency of the FCF program.

Landscape Architecture Project Internship

Work with the Urban Agriculture Directors to design and build beds and trellises for the Pyle Center Rooftop Garden. Research and develop new and innovative ideas for the rooftop garden, including recycling old containers. Help the Urban Agriculture Directors increase the yield and productivity of the rooftop garden. Design experience preferred.

Full Cycle Freight Compost Biking Internship

Reduce food waste, help grow our garden, and realize a more sustainable world by biking food waste to our garden! Bikers will work in teams and commit to at least one route (3 hours) per week for the season. Bike routes are shown on the map linked here. No CV or cover letter required. Programming

Dorm Cooking Project Internship

Work with the Programming Director to develop and enact plans for dorm cooking programming. Cooking or teaching experience preferred, but not required.

Food Culture Project Internship

Work with the Programming Director to develop and enact plans for food culture conversations, projects, and programs. Teaching or topical experience preferred, but not required.

Outreach

Marketing Project Internship

Help manage the social media presence of one of the largest student orgs on campus, design innovative advertising campaigns, and develop strategies for engaging new demographics. Three to five hour commitment expected, including posting on social media, composing the weekly newsletter, developing marketing strategies, and working with the Outreach Director.

Photography Project Internship

Advance your photography portfolio, gain experience with DSLR cameras, and learn how to use the Adobe Suite. Photography experience required, DSLR experience preferred. Three to five hour commitment expected, including event photography or videography, marketing photography, and working with the Outreach Director.

Education

Speaker Series Internship

Work with the Education Director to help organize and coordinate our internal speaker series and organize one large, formal, speaker event that engages with the broader UW community. Topics include food justice, food sovereignty, and sustainable agriculture. May also represent F.H. King in the WUD Distinguished Lecture Committee.

Political Action Internship

Work with the board to write op-eds and informative content regarding relevant political issues. Work with the Education Director to plan politically-oriented events like teach-ins, demonstrations, and voter registration drives. Work with the Outreach Director to create and distribute materials like zines, flyers, and posters.

Admin

Archivist Project Intern

Work with the Administrative Director to record and organize information about the history of our organization, articulate complicated data to diverse audiences, like ASM committees and the F.H. King Board of Directors, and develop the 'F.H. King Family Tree'.
